As the conflict in Ukraine continues, so too does Russian President Vladimir Putin’s denial of any Russian involvement. But a recent report from think tank the Atlantic Council used open source information and social media to find evidence of Russian troops across the border.

Using the Atlantic Council’s methodology, VICE News correspondent Simon Ostrovsky follows the digital and literal footprints of one Russian soldier, tracking him from eastern Ukraine to Siberia, to prove that Russian soldiers are fighting in Ukraine.

👏👏👏👏
i.e.m.
Ukrainian crying about Crimea while the Crimeans themselves like the current situation. They feel more Russian than Ukrainian so why are the Ukrainians still crying.

i support the investigative journalism, but by God Vice this is the definition of horribly reckless. Say what you will about the Russian intervention, but as you reminded us repeatedly "he is a real person" with a family who has to face real consequences. You could have at least blurred his face or given him an alternate name. He could potentially be long dead by now because of your horribly irresponsible reporting. All to prove what everyone already knew.

The same as is happening in other countries that are close friends with Russia. Venezuela having cuban and russian intelligence forces and Nicaragua having actual Venezuelan and cuban soldiers, as well as intelligence forces. They all act the same way.

Chinese special forces....

Plenty of fighters from all countries in Ukrainian civil war. From Germany, Sweden, Italy, Serbia, Russia, U.S. Chechens (on both side) etc... Some Russian neo Nazis fight for Ukrainian fascist regime. Some Russian and Belarus neo Nazis were awarded Ukrainian citizenship by Ukrainian President.

Amazing job!

Buryats are a sub-group of Mongolians who were annexed by Russia along with their land back in 17th century, now they're used as cannon fodders in the Russian army.. The capital of the Buryat autonomous region Ulan-Ude or Улаан-Үүд roughly translates as 'Red Gate' or 'Red Entrance', similar to the name of Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar which means 'Red Hero'. The name Bato, Batu or just Bat is a very common name in Mongolia, one of Chingis Khan's grandson was named Bat and he ruled the 'Golden Horde' which was in present day Russia and was one of the 4 empires when Chingis Khan divided his empire to 4 smaller empires for his 4 sons.

I got sucked into a watching-loop of old Vice videos, especially with Ostrovsky. Vice was incredible. Hope they'll revert to hands-on, factual reporting. Love their style.

Man, it doesn't bear thinking what happened to that soldier once his superiors found out. Go directly to Gulag, do not pass go, and a tragic suicide by 2 shots to the back of the head shortly afterwards

The high walls, electric fences, and private security guards surrounding South Africa's residences and businesses are as inherent to the country's landscape as Table Mountain is to Cape Town. And with good reason — South Africa's 2012-2013 crime statistics were the worst in a decade, with increases in murder, attempted murder, violent armed robbery, and carjackings.

Fear of crime has led to a boom in South Africa's private security industry since apartheid ended 20 years ago. The field's quick expansion is largely a result of continued social and economic inequality, increased violence, and inept police forces.

VICE News traveled to South Africa's mother city Cape Town to look at the lifestyle gap between those who can and cannot afford the luxury of safety.
