In the midst of WWII, Stalin decided to invade the small nation of Finland. It did not go the way he wanted it to. This is the story of the quagmire of 1939 that often isn't talked about between the Fins and the Russians.

Apologies about the couple weeks without a video. Christmas time is here and I've also been busy with my own AlternateHistoryHub stuff. If you want to help out the channel, it's now kinda obligatory to like and comment because the analytics do indeed like that. Thanks guys. More content weekly now that the holidays are over. -Cody

A Soviet failure.

A Finnish defeat.

Stalin likely made up the thing about Germany as an excuse he seemed to love invading other countries at the expanse of his own people

Finland did end up as cobelligerants on Germany's side during WWII though... Even receiving arms shipments. Probably because of the first invasion admittedly but it does feel like a pretty major omission

speaking as a Finn, it is not strictly speaking true that Finland had no fascistic tendencies whatsoever. it's complicated but our upper class did have close cultural ties with Germany, and we did have these unrests in the 30s involving semi-fascistic anti-communist peasant movements. you see after the civil war in 1918, Finnish society was very deeply divided along class lines, and there was an active societal segregation going on between the 'reds' and the 'whites'. our bourgeois upper class viewed socialists as a natural nemesis and threat to the very political system and independence of Finland, so they to a large degree tolerated the ultra-nationalists. The Lapua Movement (in case you want to google it) actually got some anti-communist laws through with their grassroots activism, making it illegal for socialists to openly gather and spread propaganda. They were eventually cracked down upon when they went too far, but it's not entirely fair to say that they didn't have any sympathies whatsoever from the upper class. so there.

The relationship between the West and Egypt has been complicated, and as interesting as anything else relating to Egypt.
