The West has used everything from signals intelligence operations, espionage, fighter jet saber-rattling, and diplomatic standoffs to stem the rise of Russian influence around the world. These efforts are coming to a dangerous head in Ukraine — a classic Eastern Bloc proxy state — where the presence of NATO troops is driving tensions to Cold War-era levels.

As the armed conflict between the Ukrainian army and Russian-backed separatists enters its third year, VICE travels to the frontline to take a closer look at what international assistance really looks like for those caught in the line of fire.

Even if I'm American or autistic, I'd support Ukraine in the frontlines

Sounds like a "family fight". The rest of the world is not going to bother. Ukraine a pain in the ass to Russia..all the better..but they are on their own. Alot more places need to fight "their own wars". Completely inappropriate for Canadians to be there...in any capacity.

This wouldn't have happen had Russia been destroyed the moment the atomic bomb was created..Russia is nothing but a major enemy to all the world. For too many centuries europe has had to deal with Russia and it should have been reduced in half or less and more civilised nations have the western half of Russia. Only a global war will set things right..proxy wars are just a waste of time ..money and exhausted nations with no measurable results.

Glory to Ukraine. Y'all through out Yanukovic when you found out he was a Russian puppet. America has to do the same, and soon.

When will Europeans stop killing each other? When will Europeans realize the enemy is not each other but our own governments?

I cant help but watch these videos and feel for the people caught up in it all. I genuinely have no first hand experience in european politics and my life in Australia is so different and not governed by war and conflict. It is beyond my comprehension how my family would survive in some of these situations. I would love one day to take a young man and his family from this conflict and show him our way of life when my problems include such things as sunburn at the beach.

NATO must immediately accept Ukraine as the NATO member. Ukraine is facing russian agression, Ukraine is democratic country, even with economical problems - we HAVE TO provide Ukraine with all possible and impossible support, including the most lethal weapons!

As an uneasy ceasefire continues to hold in Eastern Ukraine, VICE News returns to Donetsk with an exclusive film that follows some of the characters involved in setting up the self-proclaimed state of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR).

In early April 2014, pro-Russia rebels seized the regional administration building and other key institutions in Donetsk, expelling Ukrainian officials and raising their own flag. The rebellion here — and other incidents elsewhere — quickly escalated into a bloody civil war that has left over 2,000 people dead and displaced more than a million.

Filmed over six weeks, this documentary follows the chaotic birth of the DPR as it tries to forge a path to independence and closer ties to Russia.
